Marion County Ocala
Home of the Iconic Equestrian
Marion County is one of the major thoroughbred centers of the world, with over 1,200 horse farms and about 900 thoroughbred farms totaling some 77,000 acres.
And, Ocala, specifically, is home to some of the most important chapters in thoroughbred racing history, with the first thoroughbred horse farm in Florida dating back to 1943 when Carl G. Rose saw the future of horse racing and of the town that few people knew existed. Until, that is, the following year when one of his horses, Gornil, won at Miami's Tropical Park - the first Florida-raised thoroughbred to win a Florida race. A decade later, local entrepreneur Bonnie Heath's thoroughbred, Needles (1953-1984), became Florida's first Kentucky Derby winner that also went on to win the Belmont Stakes. Next came Marion County-bred and -raised Affirmed (1975-2001) that won the Triple Crown in 1978.
Ocala and "Postime Farms" also play host to one of the largest horse shows in the country. "Horses in the Sun" is a two-month-long Dressage/Jumper event that brings millions of dollars to the local Marion county economy each year.
- Calcium from the limestone in Ocala's soil helps build strong horse bones.
- Sunshine and mild weather allow horses can be trained 365 days a year.
- Ocala, Lexington, Kentucky and Chantilly, France are the world's top racehorse breeding regions.
